  • Multiple publisher names:
    • in one language:
      • If names of more than one publisher are provided on the SOI, in only one language, enter all names listed on the source. However, the core instructions allow us to enter only the most prominent name provided on the resource, or if none are prominent, then the first name (2.8.4.5 + the core instruction at 2.8.4)
    • in more than one language
      • if a single publisher's name appears in more than one language on the SOI, see 2.8.4.6 for deciding which name is given as Publisher's Name and which as Parallel Publisher's Name
  • Possible publisher names:
    • The phrase “A … Book” is not a publisher statement. If that phrase is given on the SOI, enter it in quotation marks as a Note on Publication Statement if the name is not already given elsewhere in the record
    • The phrase “… Books” could be the name of a publisher or imprint/division of a publisher, or it could be a numbered or unnumbered series-like statement of a commercial publisher. If such a phrase is given on the SOI, and if:
      • you determine from wording on the resource or through research (e.g., a name search at LC/NACO Authority File) that the phrase is a name of a publisher or imprint of a publisher, enter it as a Publisher's Name.
      • you determine through research (e.g., a name or a title search at LC/NACO Authority File) that the phrase is not a name of a publisher or imprint, give the phrase as a quoted note if the same or very similar name is not already entered as a Publisher's Name. (LC-PCC PS for 2.12)
  • A single publisher, with multiple levels of its hierarchy named:
    • if an imprint and a parent company are both named on the same source, whether in a connecting statement (e.g., “Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers”) or given separately (e.g., “Back Bay Books, Little Brown and Company”), transcribe the entire statement as found. It is also ok to omit the highest and/or intervening levels in the hierarchy (2.8.1.4 + 11.2.2.13 (General Guidelines on Recording Names of Subordinate and Related Bodies)), but LC will not omit any levels
  • A publisher logo:
    • if a publisher gives a logo (a graphic device) to identify a particular imprint of the company:
      • and the logo includes a name, treat that name as a Publisher's Name;
      • but if the logo does not include a name, look elsewhere for a Publisher's Name
  • No publisher named:
    • if no publisher information can be identified from any SOI (from anywhere on the resource or from other sources), do not try to guess the publisher, enter [publisher not identified] (2.8.4.7)
