  • Check the 'Source' instruction to be sure that you are looking at the correct source(s) of information on the resource
  • If data on the resource and data as the element in the record are:
    • PoR/PaE–check the Data Entry instructions:
    • PoR/AaE–check the Core instructions:
      • data for this element is Core:
        • if the data has been given as a wrong element, move it to the correct element
        • if the data is completely missing, add the data for this element
    • AoR/PaE–check the Source instructions again:
      • since this type of data is supposed to come from a specified source, or sources, on the resource itself (see the Source instructions above), if you cannot find the data on one of those sources, either delete the data or move it to another element, e.g., an appropriate note
    • AoR/AaE–go to the next element:
      • but be sure to check the resource carefully, if the data for the element is Core, or if the data is important for differentiating the resource from a similar resource
  • Check below, for any useful Notes

General Notes:

  • If a single work contained in a resource:
    • has only one creator, construct the AAP by combining the Preferred Title of the Work with the name of the Creator (6.27.1.2)
    • has more than one creator, construct the AAP by combining the Preferred Title of the Work with the name of the Creator credited with principal responsibility for the work, or, if this does not apply, with the name of the first named Creator (6.27.1.3)
    • has no known creator, construct the AAP by entering only the Preferred Title of the Work (6.27.1.8)
  • If multiple works contained in a resource:
    • have only one creator, construct the AAP by combining the Preferred Title of the Work (the compilation) with the name of the Creator (6.27.1.2)
    • have different creators for different works, construct the AAP by entering only the Preferred Title of the Work (the compilation) (6.27.1.4)
  • See the following for instructions on constructing the AAP for a work in special circumstances:
    • Adaptations and Revisions, see 6.27.1.5
    • Commentary, Annotations, Illustrative Content, Etc., Added to a Previously Existing Work, see 6.27.1.6
    • Different Identities for an Individual Responsible for a Work over time, see 6.27.1.7

Editing Notes:

  • If a record is describing:
    • a single work contained in a resource, and that work has one or more Creators, and the AAP for the work does not include a Creator's name, add the name of the Creator credited with principal responsibility for the work, or, if this does not apply, add the name of the first named Creator (6.27.1.3)
    • multiple works contained in a resource, and different works have different Creators, and the AAP for the work includes the name of one of those Creators, remove the name of the Creator from the AAP, leaving only the Preferred Title of the Work (the compilation) (6.27.1.4)
