Place of Publication

  • Core 2.8.2: CoreBut
    • * if only one place of publication statement is present on the SOI, then it is core
    • if more than one statement is present on the SOI, then only the one that you choose to record first is core:
      • if you choose to record all statements, then enter them in the order specified (see Data entry order, below)
      • if you do not choose to record all statements, then only the first statement in the order specified below is core
  • Scope 2.8.2.1
    • exceptions: 1.7 (Transcription)
    • order: 2.8.2.4:
      • if more than one place statement is present on the SOI, enter the most prominent statement–as per layout or typography–first; but
      • if none seem more prominent, enter them in the sequence order provided on the source
    • optional omissions: 2.8.2 (can omit non-core places)
  • Function Ch. 2: Iden
  • Entity: Manifestation

MARC-Bib: 264_1a (Place of production, publication, distribution, manufacture)

Remember:

  • when entering 'supplied' data, put each element inside its own set of square brackets

  • Check the 'Source' instruction to be sure that you are looking at the correct source(s) of information on the resource
  • If data on the resource and data as the element in the record are:
    • PoR/PaE–check the Data Entry instructions:
    • PoR/AaE–check the Core instructions:
      • data for this element is CoreBut:
        • if the data has been given as a wrong element, move it to the correct element
        • if the core statement for the element is completely missing, add it;
        • if a non-core statement is missing, consider adding it–remember the principles of differentiation and sufficiency
    • AoR/PaE–check the Source instructions again:
      • since the Source for this element is or includes '[OSoI]', accept the data if it is 'supplied' (e.g., in square brackets, or explained in a note), as long as it seems applicable; indicate that the data is 'supplied' (with square brackets or a note 2.2.4), if that has not been done
    • AoR/AaE–go to the next element:
      • but be sure to check the resource carefully, if the data for the element is Core, or if the data is important for differentiating the resource from a similar resource
  • Check below, for any useful Notes

General Notes:

  • technically we should enter all places listed on the source, but the core instructions allow us to enter only the most prominent place provided on the resource, or if none are prominent, then the first (2.8.2.4 + the core instruction at 2.8.2)
  • it is ok to supply a name of a larger jurisdiction, but do not abbreviate supplied data (B.4)
  • data must be provided for this element; if no data is available, anywhere (e.g., on the web) try to guess; if you cannot guess, enter '[Place of publication not identified] ; do not abbreviate supplied data (B.4)

RDA:

  • check that '[Place of publication not identified]' has been given in the correct form, exactly as given here

AACR:

  • transcribe, but abbreviate as per AACR Appendix B.14
  • continue to use:
    • [sic] or [i.e. …]
    • [S.l.] or [s.l.]
  • enter only the first place, and the most prominent place (if provided), and (optionally) the place in your country (1.4C5)
    • ok to supply a name of a larger jurisdiction, but abbreviate it as per AACR Appendix B.14.

Hybrid AACR:

  • follow AACR thinking for this element, but it is your choice whether or not to spell out place abbreviations and use [Place of publication not identified] instead of [S.l.]

MARC:

  • always check that the second indicator is given as '1' if the data in the field is publication data
  • check the correct ISBD separating punctuation for a repeated Place of Publication:
    • 264_1–preceding $a ( ; )
  • see also 008 (Ctry)
