Date of Publication
MARC-Bib: 264_1c (Date of production, publication, distribution, manufacture, or copyright notice)
Remember:
- when entering 'supplied' data, put each element inside its own set of square brackets
- dates are entered 'as found' so might be entered as Roman numerals or as a month and year
- see Detailed Date Rules: Date of Publication for more help
Editing
- Check the 'Source' instruction to be sure that you are looking at the correct source(s) of information on the resource
- If data on the resource and data as the element in the record are:
- PoR/PaE–check the Data Entry instructions:
- data for this element must be Transcribed, but 1.7 and 1.8: make sure the data matches word-for-word and letter-for-letter (except exceptions)
- PoR/AaE–check the Core instructions:
- data for this element is Core:
- if the data has been given as a wrong element, move it to the correct element
- if the data is completely missing, add the data for this element
- AoR/PaE–check the Source instructions again:
- since the Source for this element is or includes '[OSoI]', accept the data if it is 'supplied' (e.g., in square brackets, or explained in a note), as long as it seems applicable; indicate that the data is 'supplied' (with square brackets or a note 2.2.4), if that has not been done
- AoR/AaE–go to the next element:
- but be sure to check the resource carefully, if the data for the element is Core, or if the data is important for differentiating the resource from a similar resource
- Check below, for any useful Notes
General Notes:
- enter dates 'as found', so:
- enter a month and year (e.g., “July 2013”) or a day, month, and year (e.g., “10 July 2013”) as found, if such a date is clearly stated as a publication, issue, or release date
- enter Roman numerals as found (e.g., “MCMX”) if you are following LC practice (1.8.2 Alternative); otherwise substitute Arabic numbers
- data must be provided for this element; so if no publication date is available:
- supply a date from a first printing date (e.g., first printing 2009 as $c[2009]), a distribution date, or a copyright date (copyright 2012 as $c[2012]), in that order of preference; consider also adding a date used to supply the publication date, as an appropriate element
- if no dates are available, guess a publication date if at all possible (see 1.9.2), otherwise enter [date of publication not identified]
Editing Notes:
- if the date of publication data on the resource is given as:
- a month and year, or month, day, and year, but the date provided as an element in the record contains only an Arabic year, change the date in the element to match the resource
- Roman numerals, but the date provided as an element in the record contains only an Arabic year, check your library's policy about this option (see 1.8.2 Alternative) and edit accordingly
- if date of publication data is missing, either supply a date (see 1.9.2) or enter [date of publication not identified]]. For additional elements to add when supplying dates, see hints at:
RDA:
- if a copyright date has been given as the date of publication in the record (264_1$c) and there is no publication date on the resource, then use that copyright date to supply the publication date (in square brackets) and add the copyright date again as a copyright date (264_4$c)
MARC:
- the correct ISBD separating punctuation for a Date of Publication is:
- 264_1–preceding $c (, )
- Copyright date is a separate element, so is entered in a separate field
- see also 008/07-10 (Date 1)
