The 'Merge/Edit' bar at the bottom of the screen is used when you are making decisions about how to load the source record into your library system.
The actions available depend on the context. When viewing a file of XCFails created by PLP, the Merge bar looks like this:
There are four actions available (the 'Mode=Compare' option simply toggles from Compare mode to Edit mode, and can be used instead of the F3/F4 toggle):
Each action will save the current source record (the record on the left panel) to a different file.
If, after reviewing all of the DB records in the group, you decide that none of these records truly match the source record, use the 'NoMatch: Load' button. This will write the source record to the 'nomatchLoad.mrc' file, and this file should then be loaded to the library system using parameters that are appropriate for new records.
If, after reviewing all of the DB records in the group, you decide that none of these records truly match the source record, and that the source record itself should not be loaded to the system, use the 'NoMatch: NoLoad' button. This will write the source record to the 'nomatchNoLoad.mrc' file in case you want to deal with it at a later time.
If the source record matches the displayed DB record and the DB record is 'better' than the source record, use the 'Merge: Add' button. This will add the control number of the DB record to the source record, then output the record to the 'matchAdd.mrc' file. Records in this file should be loaded using parameters that will match on the DB record ID, and add only the control number and item information from the source record.
If the source record matches the displayed DB record and the source record is 'better' than the DB record, use the 'Merge: Replace' button. This will add the control number of the DB record to the source record, then output the record to the 'matchReplace.mrc' file. Records in this file should be loaded using parameters that will match on the DB record ID, and then overlay the existing bib record with the incoming record, and also add item information from the source record.
