• the code matches the first 336 (Content Type) as per the MARC Term and Code List for RDA Content Types

• if the Encoding Level is less than full (not blank, 1, I, or L), and you have upgraded the record to full, change the Encoding Level code to full (blank (LC) or I (OCLC))
• if the Encoding Level is CIP (8) or Level 3 pre-pub (3 or M)
  • upgrade the entire record, as though it was new
  • delete the 263 field
  • change the Encoding Level to full (blank (LC) or I (OCLC)) or less than full (2 (LC) or K (OCLC)

• Do NOT change the Descriptive Convention code unless you are recataloging to another set of cataloging instructions, e.g., if you are changing *everything* in an AACR record to RDA, then change 'a' to 'i' and change 040$e to 'rda', but if you are making a hybrid (just adding some RDA elements to an AACR record) leave the code as 'a' and leave 040$e as 'aacr' or absent.

• the date given in the 008 for date of publication or production (Date 1) is very important for finding resources, so check that it matches
  • the publication date in 264_1$c
  • or (for unpublished resources) the production date in 264_0$c
  • or for AACR records, the first date in the 260$c.

• the country code in the 008 is used for place of publication or production only; it is very important for finding resources, so:
• check that it matches:
  • the first place of publication that is recorded in 264_1$a
  • the first place of production (for unpublished resources) that is recorded in 264_0$a
  • or for AACR records, the first place recorded in the 260$a
• edit MARC data; use codes from the MARC Code List for Countries

If the contents of a resource are expressed in only one language, then the 008/35-37 (Lang) is all we need.

• the Language of Expression code is very important for finding resources, so:
  • if it is missing, add it
  • edit vocabulary data; codes must come from the closed vocabulary at MARC Code List for Languages

Look for $e (Description conventions):

• in an OCLC record: before the $c
• In LC and other non-OCLC records: at the end of the field, but sometimes before the $c, and sometimes you have to hunt for it

If a record is:

• RDA ($erda):
  • follow the RDA editing instructions in this wiki; do not attempt to turn an RDA record back into an AACR record
• AACR ($eaacr OR no 040$e AND 000/18 (Desc) 'a'):
  • if you prefer, you can continue follow AACR editing instructions, at least until it becomes too difficult to work with two sets of instructions, at which point you can switch to editing all AACR records as though they are RDA records. This will make them Hybrid AACR, unless you feel confident that you have recataloged them completely to RDA:
    • do NOT add $erda, or change $eaacr to $erda unless you have recataloged a record completely to RDA–the record is still AACR, even though some RDA elements have been added to it
• Hybrid AACR ($eaacr OR no 040$e AND 000/18 (Desc) 'a' with RDA elements included):
  • follow the RDA editing instructions in this wiki for the RDA specific fields (336, 337, 338); you can continue to follow AACR editing instructions for all other fields, but: do not change spelled out forms back to abbreviations (unless abbreviations are given on the resource); or you can switch from now to editing all Hybrid records as though they are RDA records
    • do NOT add $erda, or change $eaacr to $erda unless you have recataloged a record completely to RDA–the record is still AACR, even though some RDA elements have been added to it PCC Hybrid Records Report

• add the Language of cataloging code 'eng' if it is missing from an RDA record
• there is no need to add it to an AACR record–if it is not there, it means the language of the cataloging in the record is English

If the contents of a resource are expressed in only one language, then 008/35-37 (Lang) is all we need, but if the contents are expressed in multiple languages, then 041 $a and or $d are used to pick up the different languages.

• Language of Expression codes are very important for finding resources, so:
  • if they are missing, add them, especially for:
    • $a - Language code of text/sound track or separate title
    • $d - Language code of sung or spoken text
    • $j - Language code of subtitles or captions
  • check that the languages coded in this field are also explained in a Language of the Content note
  • edit vocabulary data; codes must come from the closed vocabulary at MARC Code List for Languages

• RDA: do not add 245$h data, enter 336, 337, and 338 data instead:
  • if you must add 245$h for your OPAC, do so locally
• AACR: ok to add valid 245$h data, do not enter 336, 337, and 338 data (if doing 'pure' AACR)
• Hybrid AACR PCC Hybrid Records Report:
  • ok to add valid 245$h data (if needed for your OPAC) and enter 336, 337, and 338 data

  • I1 is always blank for monographs
  • I2 is blank
  • Do not enter both a 260 and a 264 in a single monographic record

• RDA: this field is not used in RDA records, change to an appropriate 264 field instead:

• AACR:
  • transcribe exactly in $a, but use abbreviations from AACR Appendix B.9 and numbering from AACR Appendix C in $v
  • verify headings verified against the LC/NACO Authority File
  • check I2: skip an initial article (and the following space character), unless the title is to file under that word or letter (e.g., as part of a name)
