Source Codes--Linked to an Indicator Value

This page lists subfield $2 source codes that may not be freely used. In most cases, the subfield $2 source code is controlled via an Indicator value. A few exceptions to this are listed at the end of the page

In MARC Report, the relationshp between the subfield $2 and the controlling indicator is handled by the Cataloging Check module, and not by the Validation module. For example, if 650 I2=7, and subfield $2 is not present, a Cataloging Check message (coded red) will be triggered (instead of a Validation message, coded blue).

Indicator 2 = 7: Subject added entry conforms to a set of subject heading system/thesaurus building rules. The identifying code is given in subfield $2.

TMQ Note: In tags 656 and 657, only one value is defined for Indicator 2 (ie. '7'); the use of a controlling indicator in these fields seems to be redundant. Indicator 2 is undefined in three other subject added entry fields: 654, 658, and 662.
